As a native catalan myself, I learnt italian (which was way easier than learning english, for example) and now I'm shocked for seeing how close romanian and italian are. I mean, of course, they're both latin languages, but dude, knowing catalan, italian, spanish and a bit of french I can (almost) insta-understand most of a romanian conversation, it's crazy. And I wasn't able to do so before learning italian.
